Keynote Address Mental Health – A National Crisis from Brandon Anderson, VP – AGC of Missouri

Sadly, each industry in many aspects, share the same contributing factors. This issue of Mental Health, Suicide Prevention and Substance Misuse, knows no boundaries, regardless of general industry workers, emergency management workers, and medical health workers or construction workers; it is impacting us all. The countermeasures to address the challenges facing us all are practically the same.

In late 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) found that 40% of U.S. adults reported struggling with mental health or substance use and that 11% of U.S. adults seriously considered suicide.
Brandon Anderson, Vice President of Safety at the AGC of Missouri, has 27 years of experience in the construction industry. He is not only a lifelong construction safety professional but also an advocate for total worker wellbeing, with a focus on Mental Health, Suicide and Substance Misuse. His passion and personal experience run deep; his impact is recognized locally throughout his home state in the Midwest as well as nationally. Brandon happens to work in the construction industry which has been deeply impacted by mental health and suicide. Other industries share the same crisis of mental health, suicide, and substance abuse.

It has been considered taboo to talk about what is responsible for taking the lives of much of our work force at a higher rate than anything else in the construction industry – it is SUICIDE. Considering the historical demographics of many industries, it’s no wonder there has been a stigma that we cannot talk about what is troubling us, such as our feelings, etc. For several years now there has been movement slowing gaining momentum to break that STIGMA. He will walk you through the state of mental health and suicide in other industries and share many universal truths that can make a difference; by having courage, compassion and by educating yourself, you too can embrace this movement and join the effort to spread HOPE.

Brandon is a contributor and supporter for the Mental Health & Suicide Prevention Program, Pledge of HOPE. AGC of America has established a Mental Health & Suicide Prevention Task Force to stand up against this issue. Brandon Anderson is a co-chair of this effort along with Mandi Kime of AGC of Washington. Together they are leading the fight for an industry in crisis.
